CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) Mission Avenue Open Elementary presented a set of newly painted murals to the community on Jan. 7. Much of the learning at Mission Avenue Open is done through field trips, and these murals represent students’ annual destinations.

“Mission Avenue Open is an open philosophy where all of our learning is very experiential,” said Principal Margaret Terzich. “We want to have our kids’ learning opportunities be embracing of all the elements around us. And that includes field trips that we do throughout the year.”

The school’s PTA commissioned muralists Jenn Ponci, a former Mission Avenue Open student, and Alika Rogers-Crooks to design this set of murals in an effort to create an artistic representation of the school’s philosophy. The process began with a survey sent to staff, parents and students in order to ensure the murals were an accurate representation of the school community.

Families, students, staff, the PTA, the muralists and community members attended the dedication.

PTA president Tenille Stewart spoke to the group, thanking all involved in the process leading up to the mural reveal.

“The murals are really inspiring,” said Stewart. “They are a reflection of the goals of our PTA to basically enhance the school and what exists here.”

At the end of the dedication, students sang a thank-you song, which they traditionally sing at the end of every field trip and to parent volunteers.
