FAIR OAKS, CA (MPG) - These are some very nice numbers: on Saturday, June 27, 2020, the Kiwanis Club of Orangevale – Fair Oaks sponsored a Food Drive to support the Orangevale – Fair Oaks Food Bank.  After all the collecting was done, approximately 1,000 pounds of food and $3,000.00 in donations were collected!  What is even more exciting is that fact that Keith Wright, Executive Director of the Food Bank, told all the volunteers, “with the money that has been collected, we should be able to quadruple the amount of food donated today.”

To say we had a successful day is an understatement! We were also honored to have both Assemblyman Kevin Kiley and Supervisor Sue Frost participate in our event, giving their time for such a great cause. Both individuals were there to say “thank you,” since both represent the Orangevale area, and they have a vested interest in the operation of the Food Bank, which serves members of their constituency.

According to information provided by the Food Bank, $25.00 will feed a family for one week.  Food Bank volunteers contribute more than 1,100 hours per month to assist local families. If you were not able to donate to the Kiwanis Food Drive, consider this: if you are an avid gardener, you can donate produce or make a holiday donation in someone’s name.  There are multitudes of ways individuals can help assist the Food Bank throughout the year.

As for the Kiwanis Club of Orangevale – Fair Oaks, we were recently recognized by our California-Nevada-Hawaii District Governor for our work in supporting food drives in our area during the pandemic, so if you are interested in joining an award-winning service club, Kiwanis wants you.

We are back to meeting in person (and you can social distance, too). Come and visit Kiwanis at El Gallo Mexican Restaurant, located at 11773 Fair Oaks Blvd., on the 2nd Tuesday of every month.  Meetings begin at 6:30 pm.  We also have social gatherings on the 4th Tuesday of every month (the location varies).  Find us at facebook.com/KiwanisclubofOFO, or email us for more information at [email protected].

Sal Arrigo, Jr., is the president of the Kiwanis Club of Orangevale – Fair Oaks.  The Kiwanis Corner is published monthly.
