CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - To enthusiastic applause, Carmichael’s summer concert season bowed out Saturday, September 11. Originally planned for an August 24 finale, the closing act was postponed by bad air from wildfires.
Great Wide Open musicians obliged with a mid-week rescheduling and presented two hours of rock hits in Carmichael Park. “It’s great to play for real people again,” said bandleader Greg Mathes, whose group previously endured many months of COVID-related cancelations. “We’re just glad the park was able to reschedule us.”
Though the 2021 season was organized late and pared down to eight Saturday shows, most concerts drew crowds of 1000 or more. Rock was the favored genre; salsa and blues groups were also featured. Great Wide Open’s audience attendance suffered due to the non-weekend rescheduling but dancers approved the four-piece group’s beat and joined in singing of Tom Petty’s best-known hits. Carmichael Park will offer more live music on the September 25 anniversary of Carmichael Colony’s 1909 founding.
