CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Thirty Carmichael children learned to protect themselves in their neighborhoods and schools during a free weekend clinic at Carmichael Park.
Leading the class were black belt taekwondo instructor Martin Ross and karate/tai chi Master Shahin Mogharab.
The free event was convened to help youth be safer in everyday community life and at schools.
“All kids and adults need to have self-awareness and be able to protect themselves when needed,” said Ross, who is the Health Education Council deputy director in the Sacramento region.
The children, aged 5 to 12 years old, learned safety techniques in priority: run, hide and fight, if necessary.
“We also talked about what to do if you were in an active shooter situation,” said Ross. “You need to consider escape routes and how to create them.”
“The kids had fun and they left wiser. This is the kind of education that’s important for people of all ages,” Ross continued.
