CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - A five-year-old child was discovered alone in an apartment on the afternoon of March 24, alongside the body of his deceased mother, authorities said.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel responded to the 6000 block of Rutland Drive in Carmichael at approximately 2:55 p.m., March 24 after reports of an unresponsive person inside a residence. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the death of a woman. They also found her young child, alone inside the apartment.

Earlier in the day, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department had been called to the scene around 2:15 p.m. for a welfare check. A woman, concerned about her mother’s well-being, requested assistance. However, the Sheriff’s Office said it did not deem the situation suspicious and therefore did not respond.

The woman who initiated the welfare check found a maintenance worker who helped her gain access to the apartment, according to officials. The Sheriff’s department was subsequently notified by the fire department, which was called for a report of an unresponsive person.

At this time, authorities are not considering the woman’s death as suspicious or criminal. The cause of death remains under investigation.
