CARMICHAEL, CA (MPG) - Aided by a $1,300 grant from Sacramento County Water Resources, the Carmichael Creek Neighborhood Association will spring clean public spaces in more than three square Carmichael miles on Saturday, April 26. Members and non-members are invited to pitch in.
The project will target roadsides and parks between California Avenue and the American River, bounded by Sutter and Stanley avenues.
Drains and waterways will get special attention.
“These are super-highways to the river,” explained Carmichael Creek Neighborhood Association president Gareth Lacy. “We want to protect them from pollution. Even a plastic bag can release millions of toxic microparticles that harm wildlife and water supplies.”
Association officers hope to underscore how contamination of drains impacts the American River. Their project also provides an opportunity to map seasonal arteries that wind through Carmichael Creek Neighborhood Association blocks.
“Neighbors who clean these waterways will learn about local geography,” Lacy said. “As well as benefiting the environment, the work is educational. It also shows how local government can work with the community to improve our environment.”
The county grant includes funding for new dog-waste stations in Sutter- Jensen Park. The stations will be installed by Carmichael Park District staff.
Carmichael Creek Neighborhood Association formed in 1986 with a mission to preserve open spaces, rural character and quality of life in its 1,000-home territory. Annual household subscription is $25.
On April 26, cleanup volunteers should meet at the Sutter Avenue entrance to Sutter-Jensen Park at 10 a.m. Groups will be dispatched to areas needing attention.
Participants should have suitable footwear and gloves. Organizers will provide garbage bags and pick-up tools. For more information, visit [email protected]
